Finding Your Leadership Style
Nov 05, 2024If you have done any shopping over the last 20 years, at least once you’ve run across something that is labeled One Size Fits All. In this case, I think the term “fit” needs to be defined. In my experience, fit doesn't always fit. Fit doesn’t always seem to mean flattering, comfortable, practical, or a host of other adjectives…realistically, one size DOES NOT fit all.
Likewise, one leadership style does not fit all.
Understanding who you are and your leadership style is a necessary part of enhancing your effectiveness. Leadership isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach; it requires self-reflection, adaptability, and an understanding of your team’s needs.
To define your primary style, you can start by observing different leadership styles in action. Whether it’s transformational, transactional, or servant leadership (or a host of other styles), each has its strengths and can be effective in various contexts. Pay attention to what resonates with you and aligns with your values.
You should also assess your strengths and values. What motivates you? Are you a visionary thinker, or do you excel in fostering collaboration? Consider feedback from colleagues and mentors to gain insight into how your style is perceived. This self-awareness helps in shaping an authentic leadership approach.
Engage with your team. Solicit their feedback and understand their preferences for leadership. Creating an open dialogue fosters trust and ensures that your style is responsive to their needs.
Ultimately, adaptability is key. Your leadership style will need to shift depending on your team’s dynamics, organizational culture, or specific challenges. Be prepared to adjust your approach when necessary.
Ultimately, finding your leadership style is an ongoing process. Embrace the journey of discovery, remain flexible, and stay true to your core values. By doing so, you’ll not only enhance your effectiveness as a leader but also cultivate a positive, engaged team that thrives under your guidance.
Most importantly, never forget…one leadership style does not fit all.
